Performance
In this multi-media performance, Bahari Chumvi: The Salted Sea, The Indian Ocean comes to life through movement, sound, video and scent, exploring ideas of displacement, migration, loss and return. Working with body and around body [water - space], the performance imagines parts of the ocean's cartographies, memories and confessions; compiling a non-linear narrative that is parallel to the experience of a foreigner/migrant in search for a “better life”. Looking at contemporary work culture, and considering the demands placed on a foreign body - how is the desire and need for rest and restoration grappled with?
The Ocean itself, both restless and calm, finds itself in a flux of constant displacement and return (otherness and familiarity); always at the end of a journey and at its beginning.
Performed as part of Diasporas Now at the Institute of Contemporary Arts London.
Performance was accompanied by original score by artist in collaboration with Sonny Bacon.
